I survived
After spending a night alone in the Canadian Wilderness, I feel refreshed and glad to be back.
My trip was full of ups and downs (both mental and physical), but I’m glad I did it.
Some quick notes about my trip:
- on my way in on the first portage, some people that were out on the lake for a day trip told me they spotted a bear earlier that morning
- canoe rental shop forgot to give me the clip-on yoke required for portaging (I had a single seat canoe)
- had to go deep in the woods to gather firewood, was quite hair-raising knowing a bear had been spotted in the area
- photographing stars is very difficult, even when you have a tripod and a remote
- canoes are tippier when it’s just you and a small amount of gear
- it’s amazing how quiet it is when you’re alone
- living by natural light feels good (I normally wake up around 10 am and am awake until 3 am – in the wild I was up by 7 am and in my sleeping bag by about 10 pm)
Here’s a quick shot I took of the sun setting:

When I get around to post-processing and uploading the rest of my photos, I’ll post a link to Flickr.
